About the mosquitoes in Calp it has become a problem. After a particularly wet spring, the increase in these insects in the municipality, and with them their annoying bites, have sparked complaints from the neighbors. To stop this situation, the Calp City Council has launched a fumigation plan for the eradication of mosquitoes in its municipal area.

The plan attacks different species of insects, such as the common mosquito, the tiger mosquito and the black fly, and is carried out through the company Compañía de Tratamientos de Levante SL, in charge of providing the disinsection, disinfection and rat extermination service. .

Municipal sources acknowledge that this year due to the episodes of rain that Calp has suffered during the spring, there has been a great proliferation of mosquitoes in the municipal area. For this reason, as soon as this situation was detected, the Department of the Environment contacted the winning company, so that it could begin carrying out the necessary treatments to reduce the population of these insects.

Until now, treatments have been carried out in the most conflictive points of the municipality, such as the area around Las Salinas and the channels of the different ravines, as well as the areas close to nursing homes. Likewise, actions have been carried out in some of the municipal parks such as La Vallesa and the Circuit de la Salut and the dog parks have been cleared to prevent mosquitoes from taking refuge in this vegetation. It is also expected that in the next few days the scuppers of different public roads will be treated.

Within the fumigation plan that the Calp City Council has in place, controls against the common mosquito are carried out biweekly from March to October and its treatment is administered against the larval stage of the species using larvicides. As its name indicates, it is the most frequent pest of this type of insect that is common in flooded or flooded areas located in Calp in the lower areas of the municipality, the main focus in extension being the emerged area of the Saladar de Calp. They also tend to proliferate in scuppers and other accumulations of water in the urban area.

The most poisonous bites

It also acts against mosquitoes of the genus ochlerotatus either aedes, – which are characterized by their virulent bite – within which is the tiger mosquito. The main area where these mosquitoes appear is in the floodplains that surround the Salinas de Calp. In this case, the actions against this species are carried out from May to October by monitoring and surveillance of this mosquito through traps, located in areas where its presence is common, among which are the surroundings of schools or educational centers with sensitive population. The traps, checked weekly, allow the detection of the mosquito and in this case initiate corrective actions through larvicides.

Likewise, preventive treatments are carried out in scuppers, fountains and other points of water accumulation in areas where the presence of the diptera is confirmed.

the black fly

In relation to the black fly, the City Council carries out larvicide treatments only when the presence of larvae is verified in fortnightly checks, since this insect has a more punctual appearance and reproduces in watercourses. In this sense, taking into account that the Barranc del Quisi is the only one in Calp that maintains a permanent water course, preventive and control actions are focused on this area.
