Calp responds to the complaints of the bathers, who cannot remove the Posidonia from its beaches

The Councilor for Beaches warns the Ministry that if it wants to safeguard the posidonia it must stop the expansion of the fish farm

The Town Hall of Calp explains that after the entry into force of decree 64/2020 of the Consell for the posidonia conservation, an endemic species of the Mediterranean Sea of great value ecological, will keep the remains of these grasslands on its beaches throughout the summer. In this way, the consistory comes out of the way of the continuous complaints from bathers, unaccustomed to this situation on the Calpino coast, and it is that, up to now, the department of Beaches He removed the remains of Posidonia oceanica during the summer season, in order not to cause inconvenience to tourists.

However, municipal sources have an impact, the new regional regulation prevents its withdrawal. A measure, they emphasize, with which it is intended to preserve the important role that this plant plays at an environmental level.

From the Department of Beaches, its maximum manager, Matías Torres, although he understands that it is necessary to protect the posidonia, he does not share the obligation imposed by the Consell with this decree, requesting the Ministry to be less strict and remember the importance of tourism in the local economy.

In this way, Calp maintains the posidonia remains in Cantal Roig and Puerto Blanco, while, as the regulations allow, the City Council has moved these remains to one side of the beach in Calalga cove. And in the Morelló cove they have accumulated at the west end of the beach, in the Borumbot area.

In the case of La Fossa, as the regional decree provides for this possibility, the City Council yesterday requested authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition to remove these remains because it is a small beach in which there is a large tourist influx, as well as a large number of tourist services. All this means that it does not have enough space to house the collections of these marine plants.

It has also requested permission to do the same in Arenal-Bol but only for specific reasons derived from the state of the sea and whenever possible the remains will be collected at the ends of the beach. The City Council intends to transfer these remains to a municipally owned plot during the summer season and on September 30 it would return them to the beach after the bathing period.

The councilor defends the screening action of the arribazones, because according to what he indicates, the Posidonia reaches the shore of the beach, interspersed with plastic, masks and other waste that the sea returns.

Necessary Awareness

On the other hand, the City Council has highlighted the need to sensitize bathers about the ocean prairie since they tend to consider it dirt. Torres acknowledges that there are many complaints they are receiving at the city council due to this situation. But the truth is that the presence of remains of this species both in the water and in the sand are a clear sign of the good quality of the water and indicate that it is clean and free of contamination.

The councilor tells the Ministry that if he wants to safeguard posidonia, he must worry about the damage that the extension of the fish farm will lead to the current meadows of this species.
